Stories for Children Magazine 5 Star Review June 11, 2008 V. S. Grenier (Ivins, Utah USA) Ava the Angelfish wakes up early on the morning of her third birthday. She's very excited to spend her special day with her friends, so she swims to the top of the coral reef to look for them. She calls for Goby but can't find Goby. She calls for Seahorse, but can't find Seahorse either. She spends more time looking for and calling for Crab and Starfish, but can't find them either. Ava is very sad - it's her birthday and she wants to play with her friends! Where have all her friends gone to? Didn't they know it was Ava's birthday? You'll just have to read this book to see what happens next.
Author Trisha Speed Shaskan did an awesome job on the text - easy, understandable wording, where every word counts. Accompanied by the very colorful and kid-friendly illustrations of James Mackey, this book is a fun read for parents to share with their littlest ones. Even the size of the book is smaller than average with a nice hard cover that makes it easy to hold and read. A happy little gentle book for your earliest readers - I give it a high five!
This adorable picture book is published by Picture Window Books and is listed under the color PURPLE Level for their line of Read-It-Readers. The description given for this level is: "The Purple Level presents basic topics and objects using high frequency words and simple language patterns." I think it is a wonderful idea for the publisher to divide their books into different levels so that parents will know exactly what they are getting when they buy a Picture Window Book.
