Product Description
Tear Soup, a recipe for healing after loss, is a family story book that centers around an old and somewhat wise woman, Grandy. Grandy has just suffered a big loss in her life and so she is headed to the kitchen to make a special batch of Tear Soup. To season her soup Grandy adds memories like the good times and the bad times, the silly and the sad times. She does not want to forget even one precious memory of her loss. Tear Soup recognizes and reinforces the fact that every member of the family from the youngest to the oldest will grieve in his own way. Because we never learn exactly who or what Grandy lost and why she is making Tear Soup, the story remains open to countless situations of bereavement. Author: Pat Schweibert, et al Grade: 2 and up Pages: 56 Pages, Hardcover Publisher: Grief Watch ISBN: 9780961519766

4 out of 5 stars help with grieving   August 31, 2010

Tear Soup was recommended to me after a loss. Now I've given it to others to help them with the grieving process. It is great for
all ages, especially to read together with children or grandchildren. It does not have a religious slant - just helps us go through
the inevitable feelings we all have after the loss of a loved one.

5 out of 5 stars great book on grief for ALL ages   August 4, 2010

My recently widowed friend received this book anonymously - At first look you think it's a children's book because it is oversized and each page is in full color with only about two sentences on each page. But the message is warm and wonderful and explains the grief process as seen through the eyes of one woman who every once in a while decides to make a batch of "tear soup". It is truly cross-generational and has become the perfect gift for any person working through grief.

Whenever someone suffers a loss, my wife asks me to get a copy of this book to give the family, especially if there are small children involved. She says it helps them to cope with loss in a loving way. It must serve that purpose well because she had given more than five.

Those who have walked through the death of a loved one know that this jouney is unpredictable and very difficult! This book make it ok for grieving to look different from one person to the next. Tear Soup acknowledges various aspects of the grieving process with candor, gentle humor and excellent graphics. Although the book graphic feature an older couple, its message spans to youth and young adults as well. The family dog adds a connecting touch to younger generations. I have given this book as a condolence gift to families who have experienced grief. It has a life beyond a fresh bouquet of flowers, as it is offers understanding and opportunity to grieve in accordance to ones own timing. Special appreciation to all who help to create this wonderful resource for those in deepest despair.

My husband and I bought this book after our son was stillborn. We had a 2 years old at the time and bought her We Were Gonna Have a Baby But Had an Angel Instead. She adores it! We read it ALL of the time. We haven't yet started sharing Tear Soup with her because we thought it was a bit over her head. She seems ready now. I'm sure she will love it as much as we do. Thank you Pat Schweibert, Chuck DeKlyen, and Taylor Bills for creating this amazing collection of books!
