Product Description
Judith Viorst. Poor Alexander! He woke up with gum in his hair; his mom forgot to put dessert in his lunch bag; there were lima beans for dinner, and kissing on TV even the cat refuses to sleep in his bed. Some days are just like that. Alexander's awful day is the perfect lead-off for this collection of funny, touching stories about the ups and downs of childhood from imaginary monsters to saying goodbye to a family pet. Judith Viorst's insightful and humorous stories are the perfect antidote to any child's "terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day."

Amazon.com Review
"I went to sleep with gum in my mouth and now there's gum in my hair and when I got out of bed this morning I tripped on the skateboard and by mistake I dropped my sweater in the sink while the water was running and I could tell it was going to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day."

So begin the trials and tribulations of the irascible Alexander, who has been earning the sympathy of readers since 1972. People of all ages have terrible, horrible days, and Alexander offers us the cranky commiseration we crave as well as a reminder that things may not be all that bad. As Alexander's day progresses, he faces a barrage of bummers worthy of a country- western song: getting smushed in the middle seat of the car, a dessertless lunch sack, a cavity at the dentist's office, stripeless sneakers, witnessing kissing on television, and being forced to sleep in railroad-train pajamas. He resolves several times to move to Australia.

Judith Viorst flawlessly and humorously captures a child's testy temperament, rendering Alexander sympathetic rather than whiny. Our hero's gum-styled hair and peevish countenance are artfully depicted by Ray Cruz's illustrations. An ALA Notable Book, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day is a great antidote to bad days everywhere, sure to put a smile on even the crabbiest of faces. (Ages 5 to 9)

5 out of 5 stars You are not alone... It happens to everyone...   November 15, 2008
Seckin Petek (Toronto, ON Canada)
I found this book while I was looking for a gift for a six year old boy today. I loved it so much that I got one for the birthday boy and one for my almost-six year-old daughter. It is absolutely amazing.. Alexander is having a bad day, no not just a bad day, a horrible day, as we, adults, call it "a day from hell"... So he decides to move to a far away land where people do not have to live days like this - but guess what? He figures it out.. Anyone, anywhere can have a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day... It happens to everyone.. He is not alone, and it is not the end of the world..

I don't find this book depressing at all.. It is realistic and entertaining at the same time.. I recommend this book for not only kids (probably 5+) but also teenagers and adults.

This is a book that children can't help but chuckle when they it is read. It's just fun and Alexander is so loveable like another character,Cyrano in Life's Little Lessons: An Inch-By-Inch Tale of Success, another fabulous piece of children's literature with inspiring messages, laughs and a great bonus reading guide for parents and teachers. Check this out.

A wonderful, fun book to lighten the mood. My daughter loves to read this. I use the phrase with my eight year old daughter: "some days are like this..." (my daughter always smiles and finishes with: "even in Australia" for me. Cheers her up every time. We read it often and have for a while. It helps that her name is Alexandra.
