5 out of 5 stars Great for Beginning readers   September 2, 2010
Nate
- I am very thankful that we purchased these books for my 5 year old. We were trying to get her to read but were having difficulty finding skill appropriate books. My daughter has in a matter of a few weeks gone from not reading to reading the entire Set 1 of Bob Books. She loves being able to read a whole book.
- My daughter did know the whole alphabet and the sounds each letter made prior to these books. If your child does not know the alphabet and the sounds, the set prior to this one would be beneficial.
- As a little side note. Every time she reads a Bob book she puts a sticker on a "graph" sheet. What kid doesn't like stickers. We did this for a few reasons. One, this is a great way, especially in the beginning where reading is more difficult, to give them a little more motivation to read. Two, this is a fun way to watch their progress. Three, it allows her to see just how many books she has read (continued motivation). We try to read one to four books a day right now.

Overall this is a great series that we will continue to use. My only complaint is that the books themselves could be a little more durable. My two year old likes to "read" too and we have to remind him plenty to be gentle so they don't get destroyed.

My 2 year old grandson, whose name is Sam was excited to see his name on one of the books. And the 4 year old grandson was excited that he could "read" these books. I will definitely be ordering more sets.

3 out of 5 stars Check them out before you buy them!   June 17, 2010

We had the first two sets of these Bob Books (as gifts to our younger daughter). Now that my girls can read, I'm still not sure what the allure of these books is.

Sure, my younger one had been excited about reading these books... she was ecstatic that she could them all by herself! But by the time we approached the last few lessons from "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" (a much better investment, by the way), she could read most of the readers marked "Pre-Level 1", "Level 1" and some "Level 2" that I see little point in continuing with these overly simplistic Bob Book stories.

Not to say that they are without merits, but try one or two sets before you plunge ahead. Better yet, if you can split a set with a couple of families, buy them used, or check them out at the library. I personally think that it's not worth the full amount they're asking for. I would have spent my money elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars The rhythm of the Bob books is the key to reading success!   May 12, 2010

Words Aren't Fair

By Martha Biery, author of Words Aren't Fair

As a reading specialist, my favorite starter books are the Bob books. There is nothing like simple words with lots of repetition to get kids to the point where they experience success. It might seem too simple to you as adults, but trust me, as a teacher for 40 years, this is the way it starts - with the Bob books. Some kids spend a fair amount of time on these books and that's because they need to. Other kids breeze through them and go on to more complicated stories. But if your child needs reinforcement of the reading code, you can't go wrong with the Bob books.
