"Did you ever fly a kite in bed? Did you ever walk with ten cats on your head?" Such are the profound, philosophical queries posed in this well-loved classic by Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel. While many rhymes in this couplet collection resemble sphinx-worthy riddles, Seuss's intention is clear: teach children to read in a way that is both entertaining and educational. It matters little that each wonderful vignette has nothing to do with the one that follows. (We move seamlessly from a one-humped Wump and Mister Gump to yellow pets called the Zeds with one hair upon their heads.) Children today will be as entranced by these ridiculous rhymes as they have been since the book's original publication in 1960--so amused and enchanted, in fact, they may not even notice they are learning to read! (Ages 4 to 8)

5 out of 5 stars Seussian animals for everyone   July 22, 2008

Reading this book is like taking a stroll down a Seussian zoo. It's one of my favorites, with its silly, clever rhymes, funny dialogues and interesting creatures. I like it more than "If I ran the zoo" (also by Dr. Seuss). Like all Seuss books, this one is great for introducing children to the love of reading.

5 out of 5 stars The first book I bought for my god daughter.   June 7, 2008
M. Mclean (92557)
Dr. Seuss is the best way to get your child to see that reading is fun.
With the Dr.s lyrical sing song rhymes and strange creatures, bright colors.
Salem loves this book, she loves to show how bright she is,she wants to count,to do her alphabet,at this age (She is 22 Mo) this is playing,
and the Dr. keeps children entertained, reading the same timeless books
that you knew as a child.

5 out of 5 stars For Adults Too!   June 1, 2008
Bu-chan (Aotearoa)
It was purely by accident that I found myself with a copy of Dr Seuss's "One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish" in my hands and actually reading it. The nostalgia trip lasted about 3.5 seconds before I started enjoying the book in its own right as an adult. It is just plain linguistic fun. And, yeah, it will appeal to kids as well.

The story itself is nonsensical fun, and the use of sounds to create that sense of fun is very creative. As only Dr Seuss can do, he makes reading the book not only fun at a mental level, but the rhythm and sounds also have the ability to make reading it fun. I found myself captivated in anticipation of what Seuss would do next with the words. The names of various creatures are also just plain fun and really appeal to the child in us all.

The illustrations are what one would expect from Dr Seuss: gaudy colours and not too much detail. They are fantastic pictures, even though they are quite simple. They do not distract from the text, but there is enough there to keep younger kids focused. Of course, that should not stop us older "kids" enjoying them.

This is a true classic of a book, and is among my favourites of Dr Seuss books. I have to confess to still enjoying it and know that kids do too. It is a great book and well-written. Kids everywhere should have at least one Dr Seuss book.

Oh yeah, this book is great for pronunciation classes, as well, with foreign students! It targets some common sounds that are problematic for some nationalities.

My children grew up with this book. We would snuggle up and read it nearly every night. This copy was purchased for my Granddaughter and I am snuggling once again reading this little book. She loves it too...as do I.

My 14 month old loves this book! Seuss is a genius. The rhyming keeps his attention throughout the whole book!
