Product Description
A unique learning experience geared to the way children learn best The biggest hurdle young children face when learning a new language is stringing words together into coherent sentences. Developmental psychologist and veteran language teacher Maurice Hazan has created an ingenious new way to help kids over that hurdle. The I Can Read and Speak series makes learning fun with an exciting combination of dramatic action pictures, sounds, symbols, and learning activities including flash cards and stickers. Kids are introduced to 60 new words that are used in simple illustrated stories. Learning activities at the end of each story encourage kids to re-create the sentences and create new sentences of their own, using specially designed flash-card symbols. Each book includes: - A colorful storybook illustrated with photographs
- Lively storybook narration (on CD) for proper pronunciation
- Flash cards and stickers to encourage sentence and story creation
- Tips for parents on how to adapt the material to their child’s learning style

Good idea, production quality careless August 11, 2008 amanooensis (Flyover Country) We've just started working with this package, and right off the bat, one wishes that the publisher had put more effort into the quality of the CD, as well as the printing.
In a package like this, the audio recording really affects one's ability to learn the language. You need to be able to hear the announcer clearly, and you need time to practice out loud, and to hear yourself.
Well, this announcer sometimes pauses long enough, after teaching a new word, for the listener to repeat it. But other times, there is virtually no pause at all. Regardless of whether he gives you time enough to say anything or not, he always says "tres bien!" afterward to reward the student for his/her effort. So clearly, this is just a matter of slipshod production. Couldn't somebody have stood there with a stopwatch to cue the guy while he was reading? This isn't rocket science, and many other language-instruction products have figured out how to do this.
I ended up spending the whole first chapter with one hand on the CD remote, pausing the disk so the student had time to repeat the words before being cut off by the announcer. This got really frustrating.
The timing problem would have been bad enough, but the narration seemed to have been recorded in a garage with cheap equipment. The sound level varies, making you get up to raise the CD volume to hear the lesson, only to have to turn it down again a minute later.
Our copy of the book has problems, too. On a couple of pages, the color separations do not line up. This leaves a shadowy line all through the pictures and around the edges that's distracting and annoying, considering how hard you're struggling to hear the corresponding audio at the same time.
On the properly printed pages, the images are colorful and clear. They're very simple, and they're sometimes clumsily edited, but they work okay for the purpose at hand. The binding seems sturdy and the stickers work as they should.
For the very limited goals that this package sets for itself, it may turn out to be reasonably effective. However, this is another case where I think it helps tremendously if a parent or other helper speaks French, or if the child is somewhat familiar with the language already.
The idea of using simple graphics and photographs, and assembling them in order to teach how they go together, is novel and may turn out to have been useful when we move on to more complex lessons. Time will tell. The biggest advantage I see is that it did not cost very much to try it out. Beyond that I can only give this package a lukewarm endorsement.
Great supplement after a foundation! February 11, 2008 Senora Gose (Bryan, Texas) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
As a Spanish teacher and Spanish curriculum author (Flip Flop Spanish), I'm always looking for great tools to pull out in my classes and keep things fresh and interesting. So I bought this and used the cards with my own children and my students.
We began studying French as well, after teaming up with Yvonne Batot on Flip Flop French: Ages 3-5: Level 1, so I bought this in French since I was so pleased with the Spanish version. It did not disappoint!
This is a neat book! You cut out all the little cards inside, and then use the cues to put together your own sentences. The CD was a huge bonus.
My own children did not jump at the chance to use these cards, but once I sat down and made a few examples by tossing cards out like a poker player, they joined in, especially when we were al making silly sentences. I am bilingual, and so this was a fun event in the household, and I believe in the class, it will prove useful as well. But if you are a beginner, get a foundation with another book first, then add this in to build confidence and usefulness in your language learning.
The best age for these cards is five and up. Younger than that, the children are more focused on just looking at the picture rather than using them to communicate and speak in Spanish. -Being able to read fairly well might also be a prerequisite for your child too, to cut down on frustration. I can read & speak French September 18, 2007 J. Moreland (Md) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I did not know any French before I read this book. It is very helpful to read and see the words as well as hear them on the CD.
Good Start for Adults Learning on Own... February 19, 2007 Terry Oulboub (Bay Area, California) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
If you are an older adult and you don't have anyone to help you get started, this book is perfect. It is a simple reader and though at times, the humor is corny, it will ease you into the french pronounciation and help you understand the language much better. It's a good way to see if you really want to learn French - then you can go on to other books that will help you become fluent in the language.
