Exciting & Historically Accurate Story for YA June 22, 2007 Cindy W. Bonner (Texas) "Sam Houston Is My Hero" begins with news that 14-year-old Cat Jennings has lost her father, and possibly her brother, at the battle of the Alamo. The real Catherine Jennings rode from her farm in Bastrop across the part of Texas then known as Austin's Colony to spread the news that the Alamo had fallen and to recruit men to join up with Sam Houston's forces. Author Judy Alter's Cat Jennings does much the same, meeting a diverse bunch of people on her Paul Revere-like ride. Before her ride is finished, Cat finds herself in the middle of the Runaway Scrape. She begins to follow, along with the rest of the pioneer Texans, behind Sam Houston as he first evades the Mexican Army then eventually ambushes them in the swamps near San Jacinto. The story moves along at a brisk pace and seamlessly embroiders many of the actual events and people into the fictionalized story. Alter's research is never obvious and adds to the pleasure of the read.
