Here's a series you can NOT stop reading! July 26, 2010

Over the years I've seen many of my fifth grade students with Ranger's Apprentice books. They've been passionate about them. These books are perfect for your good reader in upper elementary, or most junior high kids. Some sensitive or younger readers may find the books a little too graphic when it comes to battle scenes - killing tactics with weapons, blood and beatings. Honestly, that kind of kid wouldn't pick up the book in the first place, after looking at the cover art. My seven year old is capable of reading this series, but I'll have him wait until he's 10 or 11.
This summer I got one of the books, and in five days I had read six books from the series. They're that kind of book. - The kind of book where you tell your kids to fix themselves a PBJ 'cause Mom's busy right now. Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed the books. I loved Flanagan's character development, the humor that allows you to laugh out loud, and most of all the adventure where the rangers and their friends find themselves in life or death situations, but always prevail (often by the skin of their teeth.) There's great potential for dialogue with your children - determination, practice, loyalty, compassion, friendship, facing fears, patience, etc... I just wish I could be a little more "Halt-like" in patience. Aargh! (Speaking of Skandian pirates) I need to get my hands on the last three books!
An interesting, 'young adult', light-fantasy adventure June 12, 2010

"The Ruins of Gorlan" is the first book in "The Ranger's Apprentice" series by John Flanagan.
This book, and I suspect the rest of the series, is most definitely 'young adult' fare. The story is simple and the language toned down. It was not gratuitously violent (as many fantasy books can be) and the plot was straight forward and often, fairly predictable. However, because it is 'young adult', there are some moments in this book that would be taken as grievous errors of story telling in adult fantasy. i.e. when the main protagonists have trouble seeing the 'obvious' or doing things that put them unnecessarily in harms way.
Conclusion:
I am a die-hard adult fantasy fan, however, I kind of enjoyed this light fantasy tale. It was pleasant, easy to read and provided a bit of respite from some the more detailed and deeper (and sometimes exceedingly violent) efforts that I've been reading lately. I think a lot of 'young adults' would like this work, and as such...5 Stars.

Great series for reluctant readers May 12, 2010

I have one son who is a voracious reader (13) and another who is reluctant (11). We ALL loved these books and had to strike bargains over who would get the next one first. If your child doesn't like to read, start reading the first book out loud if you can - I think he or she will probably want to keep reading on their own. Great to see a protagonist who has self-doubts, too, and makes mistakes with consequences - just like real life!
